Iano Tamar was born in Georgia and studied piano, musicology and singing at the conservatoire in Tbilisi. She has firmly established herself on the international opera stage following successful debuts in Semiramide under Mo. A. Zedda at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro in 1992, as well as under Mo. Nello Santi at the Zurich Opera House. In 1993 she sang Alice in the new production of Verdi's Falstaff at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, conducted by Mo. R. Muti. Soon after that she made further debuts as Elektra in Idomeneo under Mo. Armin Jordan at the Grand Théatre de Genève, as Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito in Paris, as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, as well as at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich and at the Opera Bonn. In 1995 she returned to the Teatro alla Scala as Lina in Verdi's Stiffelio, conducted by Mo. G. Gavazzeni. She also sang Medea at the Martina Franca festival, and Iris at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma under Mo. G. Gelmetti. Then 1996 saw her as Antonida in the new production of A life for the Zar at the Opera House, Zurich, conducted by under Mo. V. Fedoseyev, then as Elektra in Idomeneo in Madrid. Iona made her Vienna State Opera debut in 1997 as Lina, alongside Placido Domingo, in Stiffelio. She also sang Alice in a new production of Verdi's Falstaff at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and Lady Macbeth in a new production of Verdi's version of 1848 of Macbeth, at the Martina Franca festival. In 1998 Iano sang Donna Anna in a new production of Don Giovanni in Bilbao and at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich; then Leonora in the new production of Le Trouvère, Verdi's french version of Il Trovatore at the Martina Franca festival. She has also performed Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte in Palm Beach, Lady Macbeth in a new production of Verdi's Macbeth at the Cologne Opera, Desdemona in a new production of Verdi's Otello at the Theatre Basel and Stiffelio at the Vienna State Opera.
